Interventions: Mental Illness and Homelessness
Different programs take action to deal with the different reasons that homeless people have mental health problems. Using many of the following programs, a community can help tackle many of the causes of mental health problems among homeless people that were highlighted in the previous framework . Chez Soi provides housing first to homeless people. It has been successful in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Moncton. Along with housing, people are able to access mental health services. The program also helps communities deliver better services to help people recover from mental health problems.

Eva's Initiatives is a part of Youth Reconnect Works, located in Toronto, ON. The organization is a youth homeless shelter. It also helps youth create and achieve career goals. The initiative helps youth who are at risk of dropping out of school, by providing them with their basic needs and helping them stay in school.

Dawn House is a women's shelter in Kingston, ON. It is a safe place for women and children who are experiencing abuse. Programs are provided in the shelter to help women and children develop protection and coping strategies. This is necessary to maintain mental health and wellbeing.

ACCESS BladeRunners is a program specifically for Aboriginal youth in Vancouver, BC. It gives the youth an education, job training and support so that they can find long-term and stable jobs.

StreetMed is an outreach program in Western Sydney, Australia. A team led by nurses finds homeless people and assesses their mental health needs. The team can then connect individuals with the appropriate health care services. Finally, the team helps the homeless people find proper housing.

Insite is a safe injection site in Vancouver, BC.
Safe injection sites help prevent health problems caused by drugs. People are allowed to inject drugs onsite, and are able to connect with health care workers. Clean needles are provided, which helps prevent the spread of infectious disease.

YouthLine is a toll-free phone line in Toronto for LGBTT2QQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transexual, 2-spirited, queer and questioning) youth. The phones are answered by other youth. They offer support without judgement and referrals to other services.
